In a shocking incident in Swansea’s Winch Wen area, a man was caught on video throwing a hammer through a couple’s front door in the early hours of the morning. The terrifying moment was captured on a Ring doorbell camera at 1:39 am on Saturday, February 22nd. The footage shows the man, wearing a face mask, a Zavetti-branded coat, and gloves, walking up to the house at Colwyn Avenue and hurling the hammer through the glass panel of the front door while yelling obscenities before fleeing the scene. The man, believed to be targeting the wrong home, then ran up a lane and disappeared down a side road into Maes-Deri.

Becka Hambly, who resides in the targeted property with her husband Michael, recounted the chilling experience. She shared that the hammer narrowly missed her head as she had fallen asleep on the sofa at the time of the attack. Mrs. Hambly expressed her shock and fear, stating, “Even though I was on my sofa, I’d actually fallen asleep whilst watching TV. I thought my husband had fallen out of bed because I just heard a thud.” She described the moment she discovered the damage, saying, “When I went to get up, I only had this little light on in my living room so it was quite dark. I couldn’t see and I remember thinking: ‘Oh my God – what is this?'”

The impact of the incident has left the couple feeling unsettled and unsafe in their own home. Mrs. Hambly added, “Since this has happened I feel like when I’m walking out of my house I need to watch my back. My husband has lived here for 36 years and nothing has happened to us, our cars, nothing.” The damage caused by the hammer required the council to board up the broken glass, and new glass will need to be ordered to repair the door. Although Mrs. Hambly can claim for costs incurred, it is dependent on whether the police make an arrest in connection to the incident.

South Wales Police have been informed about the attack and have obtained CCTV footage and the hammer used in the crime. However, no arrests have been made yet. A police spokesperson stated, “South Wales Police was called at 1:40 am on Saturday, February 22, to reports of a window being smashed at a property in Winch Wen, Swansea. No arrests have been made but house-to-house and CCTV inquiries are to be conducted.” The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working to ensure the safety and security of the local community.

Incidents like these serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and security measures in residential areas. It is crucial for law enforcement agencies to swiftly investigate such crimes to prevent further acts of violence and provide a sense of safety to residents. The community in Swansea stands in solidarity with the affected couple and hopes for a swift resolution to this distressing event.
