An inquest has been initiated into the demise of an unidentified man whose body was discovered over four months ago in a secluded reservoir. The man, estimated to be aged between 30 and 60, was found on Friday, October 18, clad in a black wetsuit at Claerwen reservoir near Rhayader in Powys. The Pontypridd Coroner’s Court usher, Sahil Iqbal, stated that Dyfed-Powys Police are actively investigating the case to determine the identity of the deceased male and contact any relatives. The authorities do not suspect foul play, and they are requesting any pertinent information to aid in identifying the individual.

Assistant coroner Rachel Knight declared, “I am convinced that it is imperative to launch an inquest into the death of the unknown male. As the cause of death remains undetermined and the individual unidentified, an inquest will be opened, with a subsequent hearing scheduled at a later date. We are unaware of any next of kin, but we are keen to identify this male, so if anyone possesses information, please step forward.” The man’s body was spotted by a member of the public who notified the authorities after seeing it in the water shortly before 8:30 am on October 18. It is believed that the body had been in the water since the summer.

Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting noted the peculiarity of no one stepping forward with potential leads on the man’s identity. He was attired in a Zone 3 Agile wetsuit worth £200, indicating he may have been between 6ft and 6ft 5in tall, weighing around 202-220lbs, with a chest size of 44 to 48 inches. Claerwen reservoir, where the man was found, typically does not attract many visitors, even in peak summer months. While Rhayader is the nearest town, a half-hour drive away, frequented by walkers, cyclists, and drivers crossing Wales, the reservoir itself does not draw significant foot traffic.

DI Ponting disclosed, “We have conducted extensive inquiries, including cross-referencing missing persons records with other jurisdictions and executing forensic examinations locally and beyond in collaboration with law enforcement partners. Regrettably, these efforts have not yielded the identification of the man.” While the investigation is currently not viewed as criminal, DI Ponting affirmed that they are maintaining an open-minded approach. She urged anyone who visited Claerwen reservoir or its vicinity between July 2024 and October 18 and has not spoken to the police to come forward. Additionally, individuals with any information relating to a missing person within their circle are encouraged to reach out.
