EasyJet Passenger Forcibly Removed from Flight After Mid-Air Altercation
An incident on an easyJet flight from Alicante to Manchester Airport resulted in a disruptive passenger being wrenched to the floor by fellow travellers, who had to restrain him. The individual, identified as Christopher Burgess, 44, was involved in disruptive behaviour, including biting, spitting and hurling racist abuse towards police officers.
Upon the flight’s landing on November 8, 2023, police were alerted to the disturbance onboard. Witnesses reported seeing Burgess being forcibly held down by other passengers as he exhibited aggressive and intoxicated behaviour. Bradley Mather, the prosecutor, mentioned that Burgess was unruly for approximately 30 minutes, causing discomfort among families and children onboard the flight.
Efforts to restrain Burgess proved challenging as he resisted arrest by concealing his arms under his body. Law enforcement resorted to using methods to subdue him, including deploying “distracted shots” and placing a spit hood over his head. Subsequently, Burgess continued his disruptive behaviour en route to the police station, where he directed abusive language, threats, and racial slurs towards officers.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Burgess had consumed alcohol on the plane after receiving distressing news about his mother’s critical condition in hospital. Despite his remorse over the incident, Burgess faced a 24-week jail sentence for charges including entering an aircraft while intoxicated and racially aggravated harassment. In sentencing, Judge Timothy Clayson emphasised the distress caused by Burgess’ aggressive behaviour on the flight.
