An unfortunate case of neglect has led to the euthanasia of a dog named Athena, whose owners failed to provide adequate veterinary care for her. Athena, a bull breed type dog, was found with a large tumour on her face, causing her unnecessary suffering. Despite multiple requests from RSPCA officers for the owners, Julie Knight, 51, and Sydney (Jamie) Rees, 52, to seek veterinary treatment for Athena, they neglected her care.

The owners, residents of Caer Gwerlas in Tonyrefail, Rhondda Cynon Taf, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to Athena, under the Animal Welfare Act. Both were sentenced to a 12-month community order, with 10 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement. Additionally, they were fined £80 each and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £114 and costs of £532.50. They were also disqualified from keeping dogs for two years, a sentence that was suspended for 14 days.

According to reports from the court hearing, the defendants claimed this was the first time any issues had occurred with their dogs. They mentioned seeking initial treatment for Athena in the summer of 2023, costing around £1,000. Despite their efforts, Athena did not receive further medical attention, leading to the worsening of her condition.

RSPCA officers visited the owners and Athena in January 2024, where they observed the swelling on her face. Despite being advised to seek veterinary care within seven days, the owners failed to act on the recommendations. Subsequent visits by RSPCA inspectors confirmed Athena’s deteriorating health, with her face becoming increasingly enlarged.

Ultimately, Athena was taken to a veterinary surgery, where it was determined that euthanasia was the only humane option due to her prolonged suffering. The vet stated that Athena had likely endured this condition for one to two months. The neglectful owners expressed regret for their inaction, with Knight still mourning Athena’s fate.

Deputy chief inspector Gemma Black highlighted the importance of seeking timely veterinary assistance for pets, emphasizing the need to prioritize animal welfare. The RSPCA urged pet owners to reach out to welfare organizations for support when needed, rather than delaying essential medical care.

The tragic case of Athena serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with pet ownership. Ensuring the well-being of animals requires prompt attention to any health concerns and a commitment to fulfilling their needs. Hopefully, this incident will raise awareness about the importance of proactive veterinary care for beloved pets.
