A recent study of 1,000 parents with children aged 3 to 10 has shed light on the concerns many mums and dads have regarding whether their little ones are receiving everything they need to thrive. The survey found that 70% of parents are struggling to manage their children’s various needs, including extracurricular activities, quality family time, and healthy snacks, amidst busy schedules and the challenges of dealing with picky eating habits.
Key worries among parents include ensuring that their children consume an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables and feeling guilty about not always meeting all their children’s needs. Additionally, a third of parents expressed anxiety about their children not spending enough time outdoors in nature. The study also highlighted that many parents experience “parent guilt,” with 40% concerned that they might sometimes be too lenient by allowing extra screen time, later bedtimes, or sugary treats during outings.
Despite these challenges, a significant number of parents, 59%, believe that quality family time plays a crucial role in ensuring their children’s happiness and contentment. In response to these findings, children’s snack brand GoGo squeeZ conducted the ‘squeeZ the Day’ report, focusing on three main areas: good nutrition, quality family time, and outdoor adventures. The report emphasises simple habits that can enhance children’s physical, emotional, and social well-being, offering practical tips for families to adopt healthier lifestyles.
TV personality Billie Shepherd, who collaborated with GoGo squeeZ on this project, shared insights on how the advice provided helped her and her husband strike a better balance in their parenting journey. She emphasised that making small, realistic changes rather than striving for perfection can make a significant impact. The survey revealed that many parents are keen to reduce unhealthy snacks like sugary treats and fizzy drinks, with a third actively working to increase their children’s consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Dr. Zoe Williams, a contributor to the research, underscored the significance of nutritious snacks in fuelling children’s energy, focus, and overall well-being. She pointed out that snacks rich in vitamins and natural ingredients play a crucial role in sustaining children’s bodies and minds throughout the day, striking a balance between healthier choices and convenience in today’s fast-paced world. The report also enlisted experts such as paediatric dietitian Lucy Upton and childhood behaviour specialist Professor Sam Wass to provide additional guidance to parents.
Overall, the study highlighted the top 20 things parents feel their children may be lacking, including time in nature, outdoor play, chores and responsibility, community involvement, and physical activity. These findings underscore the importance of parents’ concerns surrounding their children’s well-being and the challenges they face in balancing various aspects of their children’s needs in today’s hectic world. It’s crucial for families to focus on nurturing healthy habits and quality time together to support their children’s holistic development.
