Bridgend Teacher Banned from Classroom After Altercation with Pupil
A teacher at Ysgol Bryn Castell in Bridgend, Wales, has been banned from the classroom after an incident where he pushed a student into a wall. Kerry Hall, who specialized in supporting learners needing extra help, was involved in a confrontation with a schoolboy on the school grounds on July 13, 2022. The altercation occurred after the student headbutted Mr. Hall, who retaliated by pushing the boy into a wall.
The professional standards committee held a fitness to practise hearing by the Education Workforce Council Wales where it was determined that Hall’s actions were unacceptable. The panel found that Hall did not take the necessary steps to de-escalate the situation before using physical force on the student. The committee concluded that Hall had grabbed the student’s arms, pushed him into a wall, and failed to remove himself from the escalating conflict.
Despite Hall’s denial of using unnecessary and excessive force, the committee ruled against him. The teacher, who did not attend the remote hearing and was unrepresented, was subsequently struck off the teaching register by the panel. As a result, Hall is prohibited from applying for reinstatement for a period of two years. He does have the option to appeal the decision within 28 days to the High Court.
The strained relationship between Hall and the student was highlighted during the hearing, with the pupil reportedly calling Mr. Hall a derogatory term before the physical altercation took place. The details of the case were made public by the Education Workforce Council Wales following the conclusion of the hearing on February 6.
