A man from Northern Ireland has spoken out after falling victim to a romance scam that cost him over £200,000. The scam lasted for more than two years, starting in 2020 after he met someone on a dating website. The victim, who chose to remain anonymous, shared that the experience had a “devastating impact” on his life. He revealed that he believed he was in a genuine relationship with a woman he trusted, whom he had never met in person. The woman requested money from him on multiple occasions, citing reasons such as legal fees for her wealthy grandmother’s will and medical bills from a car crash.
The man ultimately lost everything he had, totaling more than £200,000, which left him in severe financial strain and debt. However, after reporting the incident to the police and cooperating with his bank, the money was successfully recovered. Despite this outcome, the victim expressed that the scam “almost destroyed” him. This case is just one among the 127 romance scams reported to the Police Service of Northern Ireland last year, with a combined reported loss exceeding £1 million. Individual losses ranged from small amounts to over £100,000, highlighting the significant financial impact these scams can have on unsuspecting victims.
Chair of ScamwiseNI Partnership, Superintendent Joanne Gibson, emphasised the lengths to which scammers will go to deceive individuals through fake relationships.
