Selfish Parking Behaviour Plaguing Housing Estate in Wales
The Penybryn estate in Crossgates near Llandrindod Wells in Powys has been facing issues of significant inconsiderate parking, prompting the Powys council to take action. Yellow lines are set to be painted around the estate starting from February 18, in a bid to tackle the ongoing problem. A recent consultation on extending parking restrictions at Penybryn highlighted concerns over the selfish parking behaviour in the area. The survey, conducted between October 18 and November 18, received various responses including one objection, one letter of support, and one letter that did not fall clearly into either category, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Geoff Morgan, the county councillor for Crossgates from the Powys Independents group, expressed his support for the measures. He pointed out that lorries unable to pass under a nearby railway bridge have been entering the housing estate for turnaround purposes, posing a serious accident risk. Morgan highlighted the dangers of lorries with trailers reversing onto the A483 southbound side to change direction, necessitating the implementation of double yellow lines to improve safety measures. However, an objection from a resident raised concerns about potential disadvantages to those living in specific properties without convenient off-road parking.
Despite the objection, which was ultimately rejected by a council officer, the plans to introduce double yellow lines were upheld. The officer noted that the objection came from a resident unaffected by the proposed parking restrictions and that those directly impacted had not raised any issues. Therefore, the council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, Lib Dem Jackie Charlton, proceeded with the scheme, overriding the objection. The decision is scheduled to take effect on February 18, with a five-day period allowing councillors to review and scrutinize the ruling.
