The Met Office has issued a warning for the UK as the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto could potentially bring wind and rain next week. Hurricane Ernesto escalated into a Category 2 storm on Thursday night as it headed towards Bermuda, leaving thousands in Puerto Rico without power or water. A hurricane warning was issued for Bermuda as Ernesto was predicted to pass near or over the island on Saturday, with possible impacts in the UK following after.
Andrea Bishop, a spokesperson for the Met Office, stated that the UK could experience the effects of ex-Hurricane Ernesto starting Thursday. However, there is currently low confidence in the specific weather impacts. The weekend is expected to bring sunnier weather, with pleasant conditions and sunny spells in the South, contrasted by windy, cooler, and cloudier conditions in the North and Scotland.
Ms Bishop noted that the jet stream currently divides the weather, resulting in northern regions experiencing cooler, cloudier conditions while the rest of the UK enjoys a pleasant day, especially in the East. Temperatures are anticipated to be around average, slightly higher in the South East compared to usual for August. Nonetheless, unsettled weather with wind and rain is forecasted for the early part of next week, as the jet stream reunites, bringing Atlantic fronts that could lead to more uncertain weather conditions.
The Met Office highlighted the potential for wind and rain by Monday but stressed the low confidence in predicting the exact areas most affected. As preparations are made to mitigate the impact of the storm, residents are advised to stay updated with weather alerts and take necessary precautions. Stay tuned for further updates on the progression of Hurricane Ernesto across the UK.
