An Indian takeaway in Thirsk has been fined for misleading customers by serving a curry dish claiming to contain ostrich meat, but was later found to contain sheep meat. Abdul Malik Ali, the owner of Amalik Cafe Ltd which operated the Jaipur Spice takeaway, pleaded guilty to offences under the Food Safety Act at York Magistrates’ Court. The incident came to light when North Yorkshire Council’s trading standards officers visited the premises in December 2023 and purchased a meal described as an ostrich curry. However, lab tests revealed that the dish contained sheep meat instead of ostrich.
Ali defended himself by stating that a temporary chef had mistakenly used the wrong meat during the preparation of the meal. Despite his explanation, Ali was fined £237 and instructed to pay an additional £400 in costs and a £95 victim surcharge. Additionally, Amalik Cafe Ltd was fined £120 and ordered to pay £672 in costs and a victim surcharge of £48. Councillor Greg White, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for regulatory services, emphasised the importance of ensuring that consumers are not deceived through food fraud. He stated that action will be taken against any producers found breaking the law.
