Bridgend Council Commits to Boost Funding for Beach Lifeguard Services
Bridgend Council has recently given the green light to an increase in funding for a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) contract within the county. The decision comes after some delay in January 2025 discussions. The proposal entails a rise in the council’s financial support towards the RNLI, which currently provides seasonal lifeguarding services at popular beaches like Rest Bay, Sandy Bay, and Trecco Bay. The current contract, valued at approximately £38,000 annually, is scheduled to expire in 2024, prompting councillors to review various options for the future provision of the service.
During the monthly cabinet meeting held on February 4, council officials were briefed on the longstanding and successful collaboration between Bridgend Council and the RNLI concerning beach and water safety services. The report highlighted the critical role these services play in ensuring the safety of beach visitors within the borough. Over the past five years, nearly 1,000 individuals have received assistance, with 12 cases resulting in lives being saved. The report emphasised the value for money provided by the agreements and the significant safety they offer to beachgoers, enhancing the appeal of tourism and contributing to the maintenance of Blue Flag status at two beaches.
Both councillors and officers at the meeting expressed unanimous support for maintaining and enhancing the lifeguard services, citing its crucial role in saving lives and ensuring safety for all beach users. The proposed annual increase of 4%, amounting to around £3,000 extra expenditure per year, was met with overall agreement. Councillor Neelo Farr from Porthcawl endorsed the recommendations, lauding the service for its life-saving efforts among beachgoers, including animals. Bridgend Council Leader, Cllr John Spanswick, affirmed that there would be no reduction in service quality, ensuring a continued positive impact.
The cabinet members unanimously approved the decision to increase funding, noting the potential use of revenue generated from a planned Welsh visitor levy to help offset future costs.
