More than 280,000 people to have benefits cut

Around 280,000 individuals on legacy benefits had their financial support terminated for failing to switch to Universal Credit, according to new data from the Department for Work and Pensions. Universal Credit aims to streamline the benefits system by combining six legacy benefits into one monthly payment. Despite a migration campaign by the DWP, many missed the deadline to transition, potentially leaving them without vital assistance. Out of 1,140,810 people sent migration notices, 284,660 did not apply for Universal Credit, resulting in the end of their legacy benefit claims. Notable concerns have been raised, prompting calls for an inquiry into the situation. Applicants who missed the transition deadline can still apply for Universal Credit but won’t receive transitional protection. It is crucial to follow the DWP’s instructions to ensure a successful transition process.
