A young man named Cameron Shaw, aged 22, from Aberdare, has been sentenced to 22 months in prison after breaking a five-month-old baby’s leg and ribs by slamming the child down on the floor in frustration. The incident occurred when Shaw was looking after the baby on his own, and the child’s mother heard a loud scream, prompting her to investigate. Upon seeing the baby in distress and noticing the left leg was immobile, she rushed the child to the hospital. The medical examination revealed a buckle fracture beneath the knee, indicating a significant external force had been applied to cause such an injury. Additional X-rays unveiled multiple rib fractures on the baby’s left side, suggesting the child had been squeezed forcefully against the chest.
During the court proceedings at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, Prosecutor Tom Roberts highlighted the severity of the injuries, stating that it would require substantial force to fracture a femur, one of the strongest bones in the body. Shaw initially denied causing harm to the child but later pleaded guilty to wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent. He admitted to momentarily becoming frustrated and handling the baby with excessive force, leading to the injuries. In her victim personal statement, the baby’s mother expressed the emotional turmoil she experienced, feeling afraid around men and deeply concerned about the child’s future mobility due to the injuries sustained at a young age.
The court heard mitigating factors in Shaw’s upbringing, including a history of domestic abuse involving his father assaulting his pregnant mother, which resulted in Shaw suffering a brain injury. Growing up in a challenging environment, with his mother being a heavy drug user and experiencing periods of homelessness, Shaw’s upbringing was marked by instability and hardship. Despite his difficult circumstances, Shaw had no previous criminal record before this incident. Judge Eugene Egan imposed a 22-month prison sentence on Shaw and issued a 10-year restraining order against him.
