A professional boxer, Joseph Morgan, is facing the risk of losing his career after a violent altercation with his former friend, Cory Roberts. During the sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, it was revealed that Morgan assaulted Roberts by punching him multiple times in the face with a closed fist. Despite Roberts’ pleas for him to stop, Morgan callously disregarded concerns for Roberts’ children, stating, “I don’t give a f*** for your kids and your family, I’ll kill you all.” The situation escalated further as Morgan brandished a knife from the kitchen, threatening anyone who attempted to intervene.

Attempts by friends to stop Morgan were met with further aggression, as Morgan proceeded to elbow Roberts in the left eye, causing significant bleeding and injuries. Following the assault, Morgan fled the scene in a car, leaving Roberts with cuts and bruises under his left eye, extreme swelling, and blurred vision. Roberts required hospital treatment for his injuries, both physical and emotional.

Upon his arrest, Morgan initially claimed self-defence but later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The court considered his previous good character but also noted the severity of his actions. In a victim impact statement, Roberts expressed the lasting trauma he experienced as a result of the assault, including difficulties sleeping and persistent fears of further harm.

In mitigation, Morgan’s defence counsel highlighted his client’s constructive behaviour during remand in custody and his commitment to abstaining from alcohol. However, Recorder Benjamin Blakemore emphasised the gravity of Morgan’s actions, particularly highlighting the jeopardy his boxing career now faces due to this incident.

As part of his sentence, Morgan was handed a 19-month prison term, suspended for two years. Additionally, he was mandated to undertake rehabilitation activities, adhere to an alcohol abstinence requirement, observe an electronic curfew, and pay compensation to Roberts. The court underscored the necessity for Morgan to address his anger management issues to prevent future harm to others.

This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violence and the impact it can have on both victims and perpetrators. The court’s decision reflects the severity of Morgan’s actions and the need for accountability in cases of assault, especially when the perpetrator holds a position of influence or status within their community. As Morgan navigates the repercussions of his actions, it is imperative that he takes tangible steps towards rehabilitation and addressing the underlying issues that led to this harmful altercation.
