Merthyr Tydfil, a town in Wales, is set to introduce new permanent classes catered specifically for pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in two of its schools. Dowlais Primary School and Cyfarthfa High School are the chosen locations for these specialized classes. The proposal is scheduled to go before the council’s cabinet on Wednesday, February 5, aiming to formalize the establishment of the ASD Learning Resource Bases (LRBs) in these schools.
The report highlights the necessity for these classes due to the increasing number of pupils with ASD in the area. At Dowlais Primary School, a 10-place foundation learning resource base will be established to accommodate pupils with ASD primary needs. Similarly, at Cyfarthfa High School, an eight-place key stage three and four complex ASD learning resource base will cater to pupils between years seven and 11 with complex ASD. These bases aim to provide specialist support to pupils based on their individual needs.
Pupils from across Merthyr Tydfil will have access to these LRBs, with admission being based on assessments by the council’s Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Panel. The primary goal of these classes is to support pupils with ASD effectively, with the potential for reintegration into mainstream classes where appropriate. Feedback from consultations showed a high level of support for both proposals, with over 90% of respondents favouring the establishment of the LRBs.
Over the years, Merthyr Tydfil has seen an increase in the demand for specialized provision for pupils with ASD, especially at the primary level. The pilot provisions at Dowlais Primary School and Cyfarthfa High School, initiated in September 2023, have been deemed successful, leading to the decision to make these arrangements permanent. The formal consultation process and approval from the cabinet aim to have the classes fully operational by April 2025.
The capacity of these LRBs will significantly contribute to meeting the needs of pupils with ASD in the region. Dowlais Primary School, currently a single-form entry primary school, will benefit from the continuity of provision in this area. Cyfarthfa High School, with its available space and support for specialized provisions, will enhance the education and support system for pupils with complex ASD needs.
