‘Doctors said we had asthma and menopause, but we had same cancer’

Mum and daughter, Jessica, 31, and Sarah, 53, from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, share a unique bond beyond familial ties – they were both diagnosed with thyroid cancer just months apart. Their journey began with symptoms including brain fog, mood swings, headaches, back pain, and exhaustion. Initially, doctors attributed these symptoms to menopause for Jessica and asthma for Sarah, before the life-changing diagnosis of thyroid cancer came in September 2024 for Jessica and four months later for Sarah.

Jessica, a healthcare worker, expressed the emotional impact of discovering that both she and her mother were facing the same devastating diagnosis, “It’s awful to be given this devastating news and then hear your mum has it too. I would’ve much preferred for me to have all the cancer and deal with it alone. My mum is my best friend, she is everything to me – going through this together, we support each other now more than ever.”

Sarah’s journey towards diagnosis started in December 2019 when she began feeling unfit and breathless. Despite seeking medical help and being given an inhaler for possible asthma, her symptoms persisted. A fleshy lump on her throat and difficulties in swallowing food prompted further concern. A trip to Lincoln and later a holiday scare in Mauritius highlighted the severity of her health issues, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of subglottic stenosis, a rare condition causing narrowing of the windpipe.

Jessica’s health concerns arose shortly after her mother’s diagnosis when she visited her GP with symptoms that were initially attributed to menopause. Thankfully, after advocating for her health, further tests revealed abnormalities leading to her own thyroid cancer diagnosis in September 2024. Both women underwent neck surgeries to remove tumours, with Jessica receiving the all-clear post-surgery while Sarah awaits her final results. The unity and strength displayed by Jessica and Sarah through their shared ordeal serve as a testament to their unwavering bond and resilience.

Reflecting on their experiences, Sarah expressed gratitude for the support received, “What a journey me and my girl have been on but we have had each other. I’m forever grateful for her, my family and the amazing medical staff who took me seriously and saved my life not once but possibly twice.” The duo now hopes to raise awareness about thyroid cancer and the importance of seeking multiple opinions on health concerns.

Thyroid cancer is known to impact individuals of varying ages, as evidenced by Jessica and Sarah’s shared journey. Jessica highlighted the crucial need for vigilance and advocating for one’s health, “Cancer cares not of age or who you are. If you feel ill and know your body, and something is wrong, push to be heard. Get second opinions until you are satisfied.” Through their resilience and determination, Jessica and Sarah aim to inspire others facing health uncertainties to pursue answers and support.

Despite the challenges faced and the scars they will carry, both physically and emotionally, Jessica and Sarah remain steadfast in their mission to empower others in similar situations. Their courage and spirit shine as beacons of hope for those navigating the complexities of illness. Their story serves as a reminder of the strength found in unity and the importance of advocating for one’s health. Through their journey, they exemplify the power of resilience and unwavering support in the face of adversity.
