Dad who lost arm to cancer becomes national surfing champion

“Dad, Stephen Downes, lost arm to cancer and becomes national surfing champion within a year. Despite the challenges, Stephen learned to surf again and claimed the title twice. Diagnosed with sarcoma cancer in 2022, Stephen underwent surgery to remove his arm, shoulder, collarbone, and ribs. Encouraged by friends and family, he returned to surfing six months post-surgery, winning a champion title in kneeboarding in 2023 and 2024. Stephen aims to raise awareness of sarcoma through his surfing journey.”
