Cases of the oropouche virus, also known as ‘sloth fever’, have been found in five countries. The virus is primarily spread through infected biting midges and has caused concern with 19 imported cases reported in the European Union. The virus has been linked to sloths, but is transmitted through insect bites, not direct contact with the animals. Symptoms include rash, headache, muscle or joint pain, and fever, with severe cases potentially leading to neurological symptoms. There is no specific treatment or vaccine available for the virus. The virus is not currently found in Europe, and cases diagnosed in Europe were acquired elsewhere. Pregnant women are advised to take precautions when travelling to affected areas to avoid infection.
