Aldi shoppers now have the opportunity to play a significant role in helping to protect the planet while enjoying a bottle of wine. The supermarket has joined forces with an environmental charity to introduce a new Chardonnay aimed at tackling ocean plastic pollution. The private-label Chardonnay, named Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay, is a result of a partnership between Aldi and The Hidden Sea, with a mission to combat plastic waste in the oceans. For every bottle of this Chardonnay purchased at Aldi, an amount of ocean plastic equivalent to 10 regular plastic bottles will be collected. The Hidden Sea, in collaboration with its global partner ReSea Project, conducts extensive clean-up operations to remove plastics from marine environments.

According to a report by the Mirror, Aldi is leading the way among UK grocery chains by teaming up with The Hidden Sea for their own-brand wine offering. This initiative builds upon Aldi’s commitment to sustainability, which was evidenced last year by the introduction of the nation’s first supermarket brand paper wine bottles and eco-friendly flat plastic bottles. These innovative packaging solutions not only reduce weight but also replace primary materials compared to traditional glass bottles, leading to decreased emissions from manufacturing and transportation processes. The move was recognized with the gold award for Sustainability Pack of the Year at The Grocer’s New Product and Packaging Awards 2024.

It is estimated that about 8 million pieces of plastic enter the ocean daily, posing a significant threat to marine life and ecosystems, as reported by the Ocean Literacy Portal. Liz Fox, the National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, expressed, “We know our customers want to shop more sustainably, which is why we’re pleased to be launching this unique wine that will support ongoing industry action to reduce ocean plastic.” She further added, “Our Buying Teams are always looking for ways to offer more sustainable options, and we’re proud to be the first supermarket working with The Hidden Sea on our very own label Chardonnay.”

Justin Moran, co-founder of The Hidden Sea, shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration with Aldi, stating, “We are excited to collaborate with Aldi on this initiative, helping its customers champion ocean conservation by choosing our Chardonnay.” He highlighted the significant impact of each bottle purchased in funding cleanup projects that aim to remove plastic waste from oceans, thereby contributing to the restoration of marine ecosystems. Moran expressed pride in the nationwide availability of the wine in Aldi stores and invited Aldi customers to join them in their mission for a healthier planet.

The newly launched Chardonnay is priced at £7.49 per bottle and is currently available in stores.
