Teacher’s shameful behaviour in Morrisons car park uncovered when colleagues noticed something odd

A former head of chemistry at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin in Carmarthenshire, Rhian Williams, has been banned indefinitely from teaching after a shocking incident that revealed her consumption of half a bottle of wine during her lunch break before returning to instruct a class. The incident came to light when colleagues at the school noticed her unusual behaviour after Williams went to Morrisons on 9 May 2023 to buy flowers for a colleague but also ended up purchasing white wine, which she drank in her car. Despite the wine consumption, she then drove back to the school, parked erratically, and proceeded to teach a small year eight class of pupils with additional learning needs. Her colleagues, particularly assistant head Rhian Carruthers, detected her abnormal demeanor and reported their concerns.

Mrs. Carruthers, who has known Williams for over 20 years and described her as a close friend and colleague, testified at the Education Workforce Council (EWC) fitness to practise hearing. She portrayed Williams as a kind and intelligent teacher who had positive relationships with her peers and an unblemished teaching record until this incident. However, Mrs. Carruthers highlighted the challenges Williams faced in adapting to blended learning post-pandemic lockdowns, which led to a loss of confidence and her resignation as head of chemistry. Following two periods of absence, Williams returned to work in late March 2023.

Although Williams did not attend the hearing, she expressed remorse in a statement where she took full responsibility for her actions, acknowledged her behaviour was out of character, and stated she had no intention of returning to teaching. Having served at the school since 1999 and as head of chemistry from 2013 to 2020, Williams has been volunteering and assisting others since the incident. Mrs. Carruthers mentioned that Williams is now in a better place.

The EWC committee deemed Williams’ conduct as unacceptable professional behaviour for teaching a class while under the influence of alcohol and consuming alcohol on school premises. As a consequence, she was issued a prohibition order lasting at least two years, effectively banning her from teaching indefinitely. This incident serves as a reminder of the high standards expected of educators and the consequences of failing to adhere to these standards. It also highlights the importance of colleagues and peers in observing and reporting concerning behaviour to ensure the safety and well-being of students. The education sector continues to uphold professional standards and ensure the integrity of the teaching profession.
