Urgent warning to gym-goers as bank accounts fleeced in ‘well planned’ operation

Gym-goers across the UK have been issued an urgent warning following a string of thefts that have left victims with thousands of pounds missing from their bank accounts. The thieves behind this targeted operation have been described as “prolific criminals” who have been taking advantage of an easy way to access gym lockers in health and fitness facilities. The warning comes after Declan Murphy, a notorious thief, was sentenced to over two years in prison for his involvement in a series of thefts. City of London Police have highlighted how these criminals are observing locker codes being entered by gym-goers and then using the same code to access not only the locker but also bank accounts and mobile phones.

Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Ives emphasised the importance of using different codes for lockers, bank cards and mobile devices to prevent such thefts from happening. He stated, “People who visit gyms expect their belongings to be safe in their lockers and don’t tend to expect anyone to be looking over their shoulder and stealing their Pin.” This warning serves as a stark reminder to gym users to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their personal belongings.

Murphy, a 35-year-old qualified carpenter, was found guilty of targeting luxury health clubs, where he would carefully watch gym-goers entering their locker codes before exploiting that information. In one incident, Murphy correctly guessed a victim’s locker code, which turned out to be the same as their phone and bank card Pins. This enabled him to gain access to the victim’s bank accounts and steal money without their knowledge. The victim, who had recently lost his wife to cancer, was left feeling even more isolated and vulnerable due to the theft carried out by Murphy.

During the sentencing, it was revealed that Murphy had accumulated significant debts amounting to £15,000, which motivated his criminal activities. Despite the victims being reimbursed by their banks for the stolen funds, the emotional and psychological impact of such violations of privacy cannot be understated. Murphy’s actions were deemed pre-planned and well-practised, leading to his prison sentence of two years and three months along with a criminal behaviour order prohibiting him from visiting specific gyms for six years.

This case serves as a cautionary tale for all gym users to remain cautious and vigilant when storing their belongings in lockers. It is essential to use unique codes for lockers, bank cards and mobile devices to prevent opportunistic thieves from accessing personal information and funds. The emotional toll and sense of violation experienced by the victims in this case highlight the need for heightened security measures and awareness within gym facilities to protect individuals from falling prey to such criminal activities. Gym-goers are urged to report any suspicious behaviour or security concerns to the authorities to ensure a safe and secure environment for all patrons.
