Cardiff to Build 900-space Multi-Storey Car Park in Atlantic Wharf Redevelopment
In a move set to transform Cardiff Bay, plans have been approved for the construction of a massive multi-storey car park with over 900 spaces. The Cardiff Council’s planning committee greenlit the development, which will span seven stories and be situated on the Red Dragon Centre car park opposite County Hall. The decision was reached during a meeting held on Thursday, January 16. This car park is just one part of the broader vision to redevelop Atlantic Wharf, a project that also includes the erection of a new indoor arena boasting a 15,000-seat capacity, a hotel, and a fresh public square.
One of the concerns voiced regarding the plans centred on their potential impact on traffic and the removal of trees. Cllr Helen Gunter, representing Butetown on the Cardiff Council, emphasised her unease about the traffic implications, particularly for local residents residing on Galleon Way. She highlighted that residents could face challenges accessing their homes with the car park in operation. Galleon Way is accessed via a roundabout nestled between County Hall and the proposed site for the car park, meaning that drivers heading to the multi-storey facility will also pass through this route. Nonetheless, Cllr Gunter expressed a willingness to explore solutions, like incorporating sensor-triggered traffic lights, to mitigate the issues raised.
Residents have also expressed concerns about a planned coach drop-off area initially part of the development. However, a planning officer informed committee members that this aspect was under review with the developer and might not proceed as originally intended. Noting the concerns, planning committee member Cllr Peter Wong drew attention to the impending loss of 27 trees due to the car park construction. To offset this, the proposal includes the planting of 50 new trees. Additionally, the colour scheme of the development will be adjusted from silver to bronze to align with the design of the upcoming indoor arena.
The approved plans represent a significant step forward for the Atlantic Wharf redevelopment scheme. With the construction of the multi-storey car park set to enhance parking facilities and support the influx of visitors anticipated once the indoor arena and other amenities are in place, the landscape of Cardiff Bay is on track for an exciting transformation. As the project progresses, stakeholders continue to engage with the community to address concerns raised, ensuring that the development aligns with the needs and aspirations of local residents.
The Cardiff Council’s commitment to sustainable urban planning and community engagement is reflected in the modifications made to the original plans in response to feedback. By incorporating measures to alleviate traffic impacts, preserve greenery, and harmonise with the surrounding environment, the council aims to create a development that is not only functional but also visually appealing and environmentally conscious. As construction on the multi-storey car park commences, Cardiff Bay residents can look forward to a revitalised urban space that caters to their needs while supporting the city’s growth and development.
