Huge debt costs and job prospect fears see proportion of 18-year-olds applying to university plummet

The proportion of 18-year-olds in Wales applying to university has hit a 15-year low, with concerns about high debt costs and job prospects being cited as reasons for the decline. Only 33.8% of 18-year-olds from Wales applied to university this year, compared to higher rates in other parts of the UK. The average student debt in Wales is £37,360, leading to worries about the value of a degree. The drop in applications is particularly concerning for students from deprived areas, with calls for a review of higher education funding to address the issue. Despite the decrease in 18-year-old applicants, Welsh universities have seen an overall increase in applications and an increase in international student applications. The Welsh Government is examining ways to boost university applications among young people.
