A groundbreaking shift in holiday preferences is set to dominate the travel industry in 2025, as tourists increasingly seek activity-filled breaks that focus on enhancing mental health through relaxation and digital detoxes. The emergence of ‘Holisti-Days’ and ‘Efficient Escapism’ as the top trends for the year reveals a growing demand for travel experiences that go beyond traditional leisure pursuits. According to a report by Neilson Beach Clubs, a significant two-thirds of holidaymakers are now interested in holidays that offer more than just the typical beach lounging experience, with a strong emphasis on combining fitness and wellness activities. This shift reflects a broader trend towards prioritising health and well-being even while on vacation.
The study highlights that three-quarters of travellers already integrate fitness into their trips, engaging in activities such as walking, running, and swimming. Additionally, a noteworthy 12% of travellers are embracing the ‘Sightseeing Striders’ trend, combining competitive sports events like marathons or 10k races with their travel itineraries. Another emerging phenomenon is ‘Efficient Escapism’, where short, activity-packed breaks cater to individuals with busy schedules who crave adventure in a limited timeframe. The blurring of boundaries between travel and physical activity signals a shift towards a more conscious approach to holidaying, where mental and physical well-being are integral components of the experience.
David Taylor, CEO of Neilson Beach Clubs, emphasised the importance of integrating fitness and relaxation seamlessly into holiday activities. He noted, “Fitness and wellbeing can be combined with enjoying time off from the everyday routine. A simple change of scenery can inspire you and your family to find time for fitness and relaxation.” The report indicates that a significant 31% of travellers are willing to invest more in breaks that offer wellness and exercise options, indicating a growing market for activity-centric vacations. This trend is further supported by the increasing availability of diverse fitness opportunities at popular holiday destinations, ranging from high-energy classes to aquatic activities like sailing and wakeboarding.
Notably, parents are spearheading this trend, recognising the value of outdoor activities in encouraging their children to disconnect from screens and engage in physical pursuits. Taylor highlighted the benefits of limiting screen time for children, enabling them to explore new activities such as rock climbing and water skiing. He underscored the importance of maintaining a balanced vacation that incorporates both enriching cultural experiences and the revitalising aspects of an active holiday. As the perception of holidays evolves, more than half of travellers now view health and fitness maintenance as essential while away, with 37% even adhering to their regular gym routines during vacations.
The shift towards ‘Holisti-Days’ and ‘Efficient Escapism’ reflects a broader societal trend towards prioritising well-being and experiential travel. By intertwining fitness, relaxation, and exploration, modern tourists are seeking holistic experiences that nurture both body and mind. This evolution in holiday preferences not only underscores a desire for more meaningful and fulfilling travel experiences but also highlights a growing awareness of the importance of self-care and personal growth. As the travel industry adapts to meet these changing demands, we can expect to see a proliferation of innovative holiday offerings that cater to the evolving needs and preferences of today’s discerning travellers.
