People urged to take three minutes to talk to a work colleague on Monday

Taking the time to connect with colleagues at work is becoming increasingly rare, with new research showing that nearly half of workers seldom share tea breaks with their coworkers. The decline of these informal social interactions is attributed to factors such as heavier workloads, shifts in workplace culture, and the rise of remote or hybrid working setups. To address this issue and promote mental well-being, Three, in collaboration with Samaritans, is encouraging people to participate in Brew Monday on January 20 by engaging in brief three-minute conversations with colleagues.

The ‘Take Three’ initiative aims to emphasise the value of these short breaks and the positive impact they can have on mental health. Workplace psychologist Dr Audrey Tang highlighted that even a quick chat with a colleague or friend can lead to improved mood, lower stress levels, and overall well-being. The initiative hopes to counter the misconception of ‘Blue Monday’ by promoting the idea that simple gestures like sharing a cuppa and conversing with others can bring joy and support on any day of the week.

A recent survey commissioned by Three for Brew Monday revealed that a significant number of workers feel disconnected from their peers, signalling a desire for increased social interaction. The findings showed that 45% of respondents have fewer friends at work compared to five years ago, with 62% expressing a wish to connect more with their colleagues. Aislinn O’Connor, Marketing Director at Three UK and Ireland, emphasised the importance of engaging with others and reclaiming the traditional tea break as a moment for bonding and checking in with one another.

Samaritans’ Executive Director of External Engagement, Sonya Trivedy, echoed the sentiment, noting that small acts of kindness, such as sharing a brew and a chat, can make a significant difference in supporting individuals who may be struggling. The Brew Monday initiative, now in its ninth year, aims to challenge the notion of ‘Blue Monday’ and encourage ongoing communication and support among friends, family, and colleagues. By offering a ‘two-for-one’ deal on teas at Caffè Nero for Three+ members from January 20-26, the initiative seeks to incentivise and facilitate these meaningful connections.

The campaign underscores the importance of human connection and the role it plays in enhancing mental health and well-being. As the workplace continues to evolve, initiatives like Brew Monday serve as a reminder of the significance of taking time to engage with others amidst the pressures of modern-day work culture. By encouraging individuals to pause, connect, and support one another, initiatives like ‘Take Three’ aim to foster a more connected and empathetic workplace environment for the benefit of all employees.
