A Cardiff shop owner was left devastated after a van reversed into his store, causing significant damage amounting to thousands of pounds. The incident occurred around 2.30 am on Sunday, December 15 at the Vape Labs store located on Broadway near Adamsdown in Cardiff. CCTV footage captured by the shop owner, Atiq Rahman, shows a black Vauxhall van first mounting the kerb outside the premises and then reversing into the building, before moving forward and reversing into the shop once again, and eventually driving away.
Mr. Rahman expressed his disbelief at the situation, stating, “They reversed twice into the shop. They reversed, mounted the kerb and smashed into the shop, then went forward again and reversed back into the shop. It’s happened twice. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the footage.” Upon arriving at the store the following morning, Rahman found it in disarray, with a shattered window, broken glass scattered across the floor, and damaged stock. Despite the business facing challenges since its opening earlier in the year, it had been making progress before this unfortunate incident.
To enhance security measures, Rahman has installed two cameras outside the shop and replaced the shutter door with a sturdier alternative. However, replacing the custom-made glass has proven to be a more challenging task due to the high cost involved. The shop is currently using electric heaters to keep the staff warm as the replacement glass remains unaffordable. South Wales Police reported that they were alerted to the incident at 2.30 am on Sunday, December 15, regarding a Vauxhall van crashing into the front of a shop on Broadway in Adamsdown, Cardiff. At present, no arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing.
Expressing his frustration over the incident and the subsequent financial strain it has caused, Rahman emphasized the difficulty in sourcing and affording the replacement custom-made glass for the shop’s window. Despite the setback, he is diligently working to restore the shop to its former condition and ensure the safety of the premises. The community has rallied around Rahman and Vape Labs, offering support and solidarity in the wake of the crime that has disrupted their business operations. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by small businesses, particularly in moments of unexpected crises.
As the investigation continues, the shop owner remains hopeful for a resolution and justice in the matter. He is determined to overcome this setback and rebuild the business, with the support of the local community and authorities. The significance of this incident extends beyond the physical damage caused, highlighting the resilience and determination required to navigate such challenges. Despite the initial shock and dismay, Rahman’s resolve to persevere and restore his shop reflects the spirit of resilience and unity within the Cardiff community. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and support within local neighbourhoods to combat such acts of vandalism and protect the livelihoods of small business owners.
