Warning Issued as Flu Cases Surge in Wales, Threatening Christmas Celebrations
In the lead-up to Christmas, a concerning spike in flu cases has led to a significant increase in the number of people being admitted to hospitals across Wales. Data released by Public Health Wales has revealed a sharp rise of almost 50% in hospital admissions related to flu in just a week, describing the trend as “worrying”. Compared to the previous week, where there were 135 admissions, the figure has now reached 195 for the week up to December 15. This marks a 44% increase in cases within a short period. The surge in flu-related hospitalizations becomes even more alarming when comparing the current numbers to a month ago when there were only 30 admissions, indicating a six-fold rise. Additionally, the current admissions are three and a half times higher than the same period last year.
Individuals, particularly those with underlying lung conditions, are strongly advised to take necessary precautions by ensuring their flu vaccinations are up to date and by avoiding close contact with individuals exhibiting cold or flu symptoms. Joseph Carter, head of the charity Asthma + Lung UK Cymru, expressed great concern over the escalating flu admissions in Wales. He emphasized the importance of people with lung conditions receiving their free flu vaccine to safeguard against the triple threat of flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) this winter. Exposure to these viruses can lead to exacerbated symptoms and increased vulnerability to illnesses for those with lung conditions such as asthma and COPD.
The rising flu cases have put additional strain on hospitals throughout Wales, with some health boards reporting exceptionally busy periods. Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board recently urged people to avoid unnecessary visits to A&E departments due to high demand, while Hywel Dda University Health Board highlighted a surge in flu cases in outpatient wards, notably at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest. The increasing pressure on healthcare services ahead of the festive season has raised concerns about managing the influx of flu-related admissions effectively.
