Metal numbers on paving slabs in Cardiff city centre reveal hidden grave vaults beneath a pathway known as ‘Dead Man’s Alley’. The pathway was created through an ancient church graveyard to ease access to the market. The churchyard reached capacity due to the growing population, prompting the construction of the path. The original church structure has been extensively modified over the years. St John’s Garden now occupies part of the churchyard. Brass numbers marking burial vaults beneath the path gave it the ominous nickname. New stainless steel numbers were embedded in the path during repaving.
