Half of us now have a side hustle, new research shows

Research conducted recently has revealed a significant increase in the number of individuals engaging in side hustles, with nearly half of the population now pursuing part-time entrepreneurial endeavours alongside their main employment. Openreach’s With Every Fibre campaign commissioned the study, shedding light on the growing trend of side-hustles. Some individuals manage their side projects by working fewer or flexible hours, while others dedicate time before or after their regular work commitments. Among those balancing work and side hustles is fibre engineer Hannah Clifford, 34, who spends her days connecting homes to Openreach’s full fibre network and dedicates two hours each night after work to wrapping presents for family and friends during the festive season.

Clifford shared, “It’s a very small venture – but it’s great for earning extra cash to cover additional costs at Christmas. I started a few years ago to help out a family member. Then other members of the family caught on, and before you know it, I was wrapping for everyone! Christmas is such a busy time of year – I think people are just happy to know a task has been ticked off their list and that they’ll have beautifully wrapped presents under the tree.” The Chief Commercial Officer at Openreach, Katie Milligan, acknowledged the entrepreneurial spirit and diverse range of side hustles pursued by employees, highlighting the personal and professional benefits of such pursuits.

Milligan added, “The skills and self-belief gained from building a small business or monetising a hobby shouldn’t be underestimated. Confidence, perspective and creativity all get a boost, so it’s not a surprise to hear that people pursuing their passions are more self-fulfilled, engaged and productive when they’re at work. We at Openreach think that’s something to be celebrated.” The research findings reflect a broader cultural shift towards embracing multiple income streams and entrepreneurial pursuits, with individuals increasingly seeking ways to explore their passions and talents outside of traditional work settings.

The prevalence of side hustles also underscores the evolving nature of work and income generation in contemporary society, with more people recognising the value of diversifying their sources of revenue and pursuing activities that bring personal fulfilment.
