A harrowing incident unfolded in Pontypridd when a woman had to flee her own home to escape her husband’s brutal attack on her. The victim, whose name has not been disclosed, received a horrifying assault from her husband, Michael Hayles, 29. The attack involved Hayles pulling her up by her hair, striking her, putting his hands in her mouth and pulling them apart, causing her to bleed. The incident took place on October 30, just two months after the couple had been married. Prior to this, there had been a history of violence in their relationship, with the police having been called to their home on multiple occasions.
During a sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, details of the traumatic assault were revealed. The prosecutor, Abdallah Barakat, described how after returning home intoxicated, Hayles began shouting abuse at his wife. She tried to leave, but he physically prevented her from doing so, leading to a series of violent acts. Hayles gripped her by the hair, struck her forcefully, and even caused severe pain to her mouth and jaw by pulling on it. The victim’s attempts to escape were met with further violence, leaving her with visible wounds and bleeding. Despite her injuries, Hayles callously dismissed them as not being significant.
The victim managed to break free and sought refuge in a nearby takeaway, where the police were alerted to the situation. She was subsequently taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Hayles, residing in Maesteg Crescent, Tonteg, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The court learned of his extensive criminal history, with 13 previous convictions for various offences, including inflicting grievous bodily harm and racially aggravated assault.
In a poignant victim impact statement read in court, the woman shared the profound emotional toll the assault had taken on her. She spoke of increased anxiety, depression, and feelings of vulnerability and hopelessness. Nightmares plagued her, and the trauma made it challenging for her to function in daily life. During the mitigation phase, Hayles’ defense counsel, Hilary Roberts, highlighted his client’s remorse and efforts to address his substance abuse issues while in custody. Despite this, Hayles was sentenced to 20 months in prison, with half of the term to be served in custody and the remainder on licence. Additionally, he was subjected to a restraining order to protect the victim from future harm.
