Merthyr Tydfil Council Issues Sinkhole Update as Homes Have Utilities Restored
Residents in Merthyr Tydfil are finally seeing some relief after a massive sinkhole appeared on a housing estate, causing chaos and displacement for many families. The 50ft sinkhole first emerged in Nant Morlais on December 1, following the aftermath of Storm Bert hitting south Wales. The local council acted swiftly, evacuating thirty homes as a safety precaution. However, as the sinkhole continued to grow due to further poor weather conditions, residents were left stranded, forced into temporary accommodation such as hotels and Airbnbs.
After ten days of uncertainty and displacement, some residents have now been able to return to their homes, as Merthyr Tydfil Council announced that utilities have been successfully restored in certain properties. The council spokesperson mentioned that the remaining residents will be allowed to move back once their utilities are also reinstated. The council has been working diligently to fill the void at Nant Morlais, inserting a 6ft steel pipe into the culvert to support water flow and conducting temporary works to fill the hole with stone.
The sinkhole, now estimated to be approximately 40ft deep and 33ft wide, has been deemed safe by engineers working on the site. Among the first residents to return were Sheila and Meurig Price, who expressed their relief at being back home after spending ten days at their daughter’s house. Mr. Price shared his eagerness to have essential utilities like heating and television reinstated, highlighting the challenges they faced during their displacement. Love Island star Liam Reardon also revealed that the sinkhole was situated right outside his family home, detailing the shock of witnessing the front wall and gates disappear into the huge cavity.
The council remains hopeful that the remaining residents will be able to return home safely next week once all utilities are fully restored. Despite the significant disruption and upheaval caused by the sinkhole, the community is coming together to support those affected and ensure a smooth transition back to their homes.
