‘Impatient’ Van Driver Causes Life-Changing Crash with Dangerous Overtaking
An “impatient” van driver has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a horrifying crash that changed a man’s life. Ian Vaughan made the fateful decision to overtake a lorry on a road marked with double white lines, indicating no overtaking allowed, despite the clear warnings.
The collision occurred on the A487 between Talybont and Bow Street, north of Aberystwyth, on June 20 last year. Edwards Bates, the driver of the oncoming car, was an off-duty policeman on his way to work when he witnessed the white flat-bed van hurtling towards him in his lane. In a desperate attempt to avoid a head-on crash, Bates veered towards the hedgerow, but the two vehicles collided, leaving Bates with a smashed wrist that required surgery.
Vaughan, 32, of Bryn y Gog, Machynlleth, had pleaded guilty to the charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The court heard how Bates had been left with limited mobility, constant pain in his wrist, as well as back and knee issues, requiring numerous medical appointments and potential future surgeries. The incident had also caused him to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression, impacting his policing career significantly.
During the sentencing, Judge Geraint Walters highlighted the severe consequences of Vaughan’s impulsive decision to overtake, which disregarded road safety regulations. The judge noted that drivers have a responsibility not just for their safety but for that of all road users. Vaughan, previously with only one conviction for battery, accepted full responsibility for his actions and expressed remorse in the court.
In his plea for a lenient sentence, Vaughan’s defence lawyer, Callum Munday, emphasised his client’s cooperation with the authorities and his remorse for the harm caused. Vaughan’s attempt to overtake the lorry, an act born out of impatience, had led to catastrophic consequences that will have a lasting impact on Bates and his life. The judge sentenced Vaughan to 16 months in prison with a driving ban and an extended test before regaining his licence.
