A man, Jordan Coles, has been sentenced to 46 months in prison after subjecting his partner to a series of brutal attacks, including punching, throttling, and biting her on the face to the extent that “nobody would fancy her”. In Swansea Crown Court, his own advocate described his behaviour as “abhorrent”. The court heard that Coles’ violent behaviour stemmed from a disturbing pattern in his relationships with women, indicating deeper issues that needed to be addressed.

The assaults began in early April when Coles and the victim met in Swansea and quickly entered into an intense relationship. However, what initially appeared as keenness soon turned into control and jealousy, exacerbated by Coles’ daily alcohol consumption. The first physical assault occurred in April, escalating to worse violence in June and July. In one instance, Coles punched the woman in the face at a pub, leaving heavy bruising, and later dragged her to the floor, biting her face and continuing to physically assault her.

The attacks culminated in July when Coles, under the influence of alcohol, forcibly entered the woman’s house, choked her, and physically assaulted her, leaving her with multiple injuries. Despite the traumatic experiences, the woman initially hesitated to report Coles to the police. However, after seeking medical attention, she disclosed the abuse, leading to Coles’ arrest at a later date.

During sentencing, the judge expressed concern over Coles being a danger to women he is involved with but noted limitations in passing an extended sentence under current guidelines. Coles, who had previously pleaded guilty to various charges, including battery and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, was sentenced to 46 months in prison with the possibility of early release on licence. It was emphasised that Coles needed intervention to address underlying issues contributing to his violent behaviour.

The victim, in a statement read in court, described the lasting impact of Coles’ actions on her mental health, highlighting feelings of isolation and ongoing emotional distress. She shared how the assaults had affected her relationship with her daughters and left her with lasting trauma. The court heard about Coles’ previous convictions for violence and related offences, shedding light on a concerning pattern of behaviour in his past relationships as well.

Support services for survivors of abuse were highlighted, providing essential resources for those affected by similar experiences. Charities like Lifecentre and The Survivors Trust offer helplines, counselling, and advocacy services for individuals dealing with the aftermath of abuse. These organisations play a crucial role in supporting survivors and helping them navigate the challenges of recovery and healing.

The case of Jordan Coles serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of providing comprehensive support to those affected. It underscores the need for proactive measures to address patterns of abusive behaviour and prevent further harm within relationships. As efforts continue to combat such violence, raising awareness and enhancing support services remain critical in safeguarding vulnerable individuals and promoting a culture of respect and safety.
