A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for stabbing a stranger in the chest in Swansea’s Wind Street, leaving the victim with physical and psychological trauma. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning after a chance encounter between the assailant, Kevin Richards, and the victim, Leon Guest-Jones. Richards allegedly used a knife during the altercation, leading to severe injuries to Guest-Jones and the theft of his friend’s backpack.
The court heard that Guest-Jones, a visitor to Swansea, had been out with his friend Andrew Warnock in Wind Street following a day at the Swansea Leisure Centre. The encounter with Richards took a devastating turn when Guest-Jones was stabbed in the chest, resulting in ongoing psychological suffering including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, flashbacks, and nightmares. He now lives with an “overwhelming fear” of a similar incident happening again.
Richards, who had a history of previous convictions for non-violent offences, pleaded not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent but was found guilty at trial. He also admitted to the theft of the backpack. His lawyer stated that Richards maintained his innocence but respected the jury’s decision. As a result of the stabbing, Richards was sentenced to five years in prison for grievous bodily harm, possession of a knife, and theft, to be served concurrently. Richards will serve at least half of the sentence in custody before being released on licence.
