The ‘significant’ but not ‘overly flashy’ bridge that will connect two parts of Cardiff

Cardiff Council is proposing the construction of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Taff, connecting The Marl and Hamadryad Park in Grangetown. The bridge, spanning 165m in length with a width of 6m and featuring three supports, aims to enhance connectivity between the two parks. The project is part of the redevelopment of the Channel View estate and is set to take up to two years to complete pending approval.

In an effort to create a structure that is both ‘memorable without being overly flashy’, the council envisions a bridge that offers a pleasant crossing experience for locals. The proposed design includes seating in the middle for people to enjoy the view and encourages the bridge to become a new attraction in the area, promoting its frequent and effortless use. The aim is for the bridge to stand out in contrast to the busy A4232 and provide a safe and enjoyable path for pedestrians and cyclists.

The plan outlines how the new bridge will improve the travel experience for pedestrians and cyclists, offering a more direct link to trails and cycle paths. With an emphasis on creating a wider active travel network, the project aims to enhance accessibility and promote a healthier mode of transportation. Public consultations have been conducted to gather feedback, resulting in adjustments to address concerns raised by the community.

Concerns regarding safety and anti-social behaviour have been taken into consideration, with provisions such as adequate lighting, a high parapet to deter unwanted activities, and a segregated area to minimise conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians. The proposed bridge location near the shipwreck of The Louisa will undergo thorough surveys to ensure minimal impact on the environment.

Construction of the bridge is scheduled to commence in 2026/2027, with an estimated duration of 18-24 months, including three months of works in the River Taff. The project aims to maintain minimal disruption to the surrounding areas, with construction activities planned from Monday to Saturday during designated hours. Measures will be implemented to protect vegetation and trees within the construction zones, ensuring the preservation of the natural landscape.

The project signifies a significant step towards revitalising the Channel View area and enhancing connectivity in Cardiff. By providing a new link between The Marl and Hamadryad Park, the bridge aims to create a more vibrant and accessible community space for residents to enjoy. With a focus on sustainability and user experience, the development of the bridge aligns with the city’s commitment to promoting active travel and enhancing public spaces for all.
