Brits have fallen victim to purchase scams amounting to nearly £86 million annually, according to recent findings by UK Finance. Over 150,000 purchase scams were reported last year, resulting in a record £85.9 million being stolen by fraudsters. The data highlights a significant increase in online scams, with a staggering 92% of these fraudulent activities conducted through online platforms, marking a 34% rise from the previous year.
During the festive season, particularly in November and December, there is a noticeable surge in scam approaches, with four out of 10 Brits reporting an increase in such encounters. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 31% of them express fear of falling victim to scams while doing their Christmas shopping. To raise awareness and provide guidance on avoiding scams, NatWest has launched a ‘Scamvent Calendar’ initiative to educate the public on the 12 most common purchases at risk.
Stuart Skinner, NatWest’s fraud expert, emphasized the importance of vigilance when making online purchases, especially during times of high shopping activity like Black Friday and the holiday season. The campaign aims to equip consumers with knowledge and tools to protect themselves from falling prey to fraudulent schemes. Recognising the prevalence of online scams, the initiative encourages individuals to be cautious and informed while shopping online to prevent financial losses.
In support of the scam awareness campaign, familiar faces from the TV show “The Traitors”, Hannah Byczkowski and Wilf Webster, have collaborated with NatWest to create educational content for the public. The duo’s efforts aim to amplify the message of staying alert and taking preventive measures against purchase scams that target various products and services.
The survey conducted by NatWest identifies several common scams to watch out for, including fraudulent schemes related to mobile phones, event tickets, online vouchers, electronics, clothing, and luxury goods.
