A council in Wales has initiated the process of potentially increasing the speed limit on nearly 50 roads from 20mph to 30mph. The default 20mph speed restriction on certain roads was introduced across Wales in September 2023 and faced significant backlash. This led the Welsh Government to conduct a comprehensive review, resulting in revised guidance to local authorities regarding the speed limit imposition.
In Wrexham, approximately 50 roads currently conforming to a 20mph speed limit may see an adjustment back to 30mph. This proposed change could affect over 31km of roads in the county, including an industrial estate with multiple unspecified-length roads. Out of the total roads in Wrexham, only 10 sections are currently exempt from the 20mph restriction and maintain a 30mph speed limit. The roads up for potential revision were identified by members of the public and have been evaluated by Wrexham council for their suitability.
Following a detailed review process and feedback from 440 emails received from residents, the council has compiled a shortlist of roads for consideration. A formal public consultation is due to commence on Friday, December 13, to gather opinions on the proposed speed limit changes. Cllr David A Bithell, the deputy leader and housing and climate change lead member, stated that the council is progressing towards solidifying proposals to revert selected roads to 30mph, with all associated costs covered by the Welsh Government.
A final decision on the proposed speed limit adjustments is scheduled to be reached at the council’s executive board meeting on February 12, 2025. The list of roads under evaluation spans 46 road sections and an industrial estate within Wrexham. These roads include various stretches such as Marford Hill, Chester Road, Ty Gwyn Lane, New Road, Chester Road in Acton, and others across different areas in the county. The potential changes aim to balance road safety with efficient traffic flow, reflecting community feedback and local requirements.
The process of reconsidering the speed limits on these selected roads underscores the importance of balancing the needs of road users while ensuring overall road safety standards. By actively engaging with the public and incorporating their input, the council aims to address concerns and make informed decisions regarding speed limit modifications. The forthcoming consultation period presents an opportunity for residents to contribute their perspectives and insights, shaping the final outcome of this speed limit adjustment initiative in Wrexham.
