COUNCIL’S PLAN TO TRANSFORM FORMER COAL TIP LANDSLIP SITE INTO BMX TRACK
Plans are underway by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to repurpose a site near a former coal tip landslip into a BMX track following the landslip caused by Storm Dennis in February 2020. The Llanwonno Upper Tip failure resulted in a significant landslip, displacing around 30,000 cubic metres of colliery tip material and causing damage to the surrounding area. Emergency measures were taken to transfer the material to a receptor site as part of the Tylorstown Landslip remediation.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has now proposed to utilise a portion of this receptor site for the construction of a BMX track, while the remaining land will be utilized for drainage, landscaping, and habitat creation. The hard-surfaced cycle track is designed for use by BMX style bikes, balance bikes, and scooters and will feature various elements such as straights, banked turns, and bumps to enhance the cycling experience. The pump track will be enclosed by low fencing to ensure safety.
In addition to the BMX track, a community link will be established to connect the track to the nearby National Cycle Network path. This initiative aligns with the ongoing investment in the Rhondda Fach Active Travel Route and aims to provide a recreational facility that promotes outdoor leisure activities for the local community. The plans have been formally submitted by the council for consideration.
