Mum diagnosed with same tumour as Davina McCall shares her journey
Kimberley Baggley, 27, a mother from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was diagnosed with a grade 3 astrocytoma, the same rare and aggressive brain tumour as TV presenter Davina McCall, in June 2023. Her battle with the tumour started with a single sign, a migraine, which escalated into more severe symptoms. Despite facing challenges in getting her symptoms properly diagnosed, Kimberley underwent a craniotomy to remove the tumour. She expressed her support for Davina McCall following her recent diagnosis and highlighted the importance of raising awareness about brain tumours. Kimberley also raised concerns about the lack of access to private scans for ordinary people who cannot afford them.
Kimberley’s journey began with a migraine at work, leading to multiple visits to doctors and the A&E department. Unfortunately, she was repeatedly sent home with painkillers until one day when she had a seizure and was rushed to the hospital. An MRI and CT scan revealed the presence of a tumour in her brain, which required immediate surgical intervention. Kimberley courageously underwent a craniotomy, describing it as one of the scariest experiences she has faced. The surgery was successful, with doctors able to remove 95% of the tumour.
Following the surgery, Kimberley completed 33 rounds of radiotherapy and is now preparing for her eleventh round of chemotherapy. She emphasised the importance of staying confident and informed about tumours, urging others not to give up if they suspect something is wrong. Kimberley praised Davina McCall for opening up about her own diagnosis, stating that it has helped increase awareness about brain tumours and the challenges faced by patients. She offered heartfelt advice to Davina, encouraging her to stay positive and maintain a sense of humour throughout her treatment.
After enduring a year-and-a-half of rigorous treatment, Kimberley expressed relief at starting to feel better and is looking forward to regaining her normal life post-treatment. She reflected on the difficult journey she has been through and acknowledged the support she received from her husband and medical professionals. Kimberley’s story serves as a beacon of hope for others battling similar health challenges, showing that with determination and support, it is possible to overcome even the most daunting of circumstances.
In conclusion, Kimberley’s journey highlights the importance of early detection, access to timely medical care, and the need for increased awareness about brain tumours. Her inspiring story serves as a reminder to stay vigilant about our health, seek medical advice when needed, and support those facing health crises with empathy and understanding. Through sharing her experience, Kimberley aims to empower others to advocate for their health and not lose hope in the face of adversity.
