Brand-New Trains Enter Service on South Wales Metro
In a monumental moment for public transportation in South Wales, brand-new trains are set to be launched into service on the South Wales Metro. The Welsh Government expressed that these new trains would significantly enhance passengers’ comfort and overall travel experience.
The introduction of the first electric-powered trains on the South Wales Metro is scheduled for Monday, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing electrification of the Core Valley Lines leading into Cardiff. These groundbreaking tri-mode trains, a first in the UK, will be deployed on the Merthyr, Aberdare, and Rhymney Lines into Cardiff.
Manufactured by Swiss train-maker Stadler, these tri-mode trains, known as class 756 fast light intercity regional trains (FLIRTs), can operate in electric, battery, and diesel modes. By the spring of next year, a total of 14 tri-mode trains will be operational on the network, with the aim of enhancing services and capacity for commuters.
The Welsh Government’s investment in new rolling stock aims to revolutionize public transport in the region. Alongside the introduction of the tri-mode trains, plans are also underway to incorporate 36 new tram-trains for Transport for Wales (TfW), further enhancing connectivity and service efficiency.
The strategic deployment of these state-of-the-art tri-mode trains is part of an £800m investment in new rolling stock across the Wales & Borders network. The rollout of these modern trains is expected to improve seating, capacity, air conditioning, and amenities for passengers, including onboard wifi and real-time travel information screens.
Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, hailed the momentous occasion, emphasizing the positive impact these new trains will have on passenger journeys. The enhanced technology integrated into these trains is expected to attract more passengers to opt for rail travel as their preferred mode of transportation.
James Price, chief executive of Transport for Wales, lauded the introduction of the modern tri-mode trains as a significant leap forward for Wales’ railway infrastructure. The collaborative efforts between TfW, Stadler, and other stakeholders have culminated in the successful integration of these cutting-edge trains into the South Wales Metro network.
Emil Hansen, commercial project manager for Stadler, commended the use of battery technology in the new trains as a step towards decarbonisation and sustainability in rail transport. The partnership between Stadler and Transport for Wales reflects a shared commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility in the public transport sector.
The introduction of these brand-new tri-mode trains represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of the South Wales Metro, setting a new standard for efficiency, sustainability, and passenger experience. As these trains begin servicing routes in the region, commuters can look forward to a more comfortable, connected, and eco-friendly travel experience on the South Wales Metro.
