Pets play a vital role in providing emotional support to their owners during challenging times, according to a recent survey conducted amongst 2,000 adults in the UK. The study revealed that more than half of pet owners believe their furry companions serve as a hidden support network, offering comfort through difficult situations such as bereavements, break-ups, and stressful days at work.
The survey, focusing on individuals who own cats or dogs, highlighted how these four-legged friends often boost their owners’ spirits when they are feeling down. Simple gestures like cuddling with their pets or receiving a warm welcome upon returning home can significantly uplift their mood. Additionally, nearly half of respondents credited their pets with positively impacting their physical health, aiding in stress management, alleviating loneliness, and reducing anxiety.
Spending quality time with pets was described as therapeutic by 54% of participants, with a remarkable three-quarters stating that being a pet owner has improved their mental well-being. Despite the profound impact pets have on their owners’ lives, half of the respondents felt that animals do not receive adequate recognition for the support they provide. The absence of these furry companions would result in feelings of loneliness for 32% of individuals surveyed, while 43% believe that their pets have greatly enriched their lives.
Pet care experts Purina commissioned the study and have launched a campaign to raise awareness of the invaluable support pets offer to individuals in need. The company has partnered with professional footballer Lucy Bronze MBE, who expressed her gratitude for her West Highland Terrier, Narla, stating that her pet has been a constant source of joy and comfort through life’s highs and lows.
Purina’s CEO, Calum Macrae, emphasized the significant role pets play in supporting people during challenging times, highlighting their ambition to help one million vulnerable individuals improve their health and well-being by 2030. The survey also revealed that 59% of pet owners express gratitude to their pets through cuddles, 45% by purchasing new toys for them, and 11% by even putting on their pets’ favorite TV shows.
The findings underscore the profound bond between pets and their owners, demonstrating the positive impact these relationships have on emotional and physical well-being. As more individuals recognize the integral role pets play in providing comfort and support, efforts to acknowledge and appreciate their contribution are essential. Through campaigns and initiatives like Purina’s, the importance of pets as vital companions in times of need becomes increasingly evident, enriching the lives of countless individuals across the UK.
