Foodbanks across the UK are facing a surge in demand as the Christmas season approaches. Aldi has stepped up to help by revealing a list of the most in-demand items needed by foodbanks. These items have been carefully selected by foodbanks, charities, and community groups and include store cupboard essentials, festive treats, toiletries, and pet food.
Recent research conducted by Aldi’s community giving partner, Neighbourly, has shown that 80% of foodbanks are expecting an increase in demand, especially from families with children and the elderly. This surge in demand has left many foodbanks concerned about their ability to meet the needs of their communities during the festive period. Furthermore, nearly a third of foodbanks are struggling to recruit volunteers.
To support those in need, Aldi has set up community donation points in their stores nationwide, where shoppers can donate items from the list. These donations will then be distributed to various charitable organisations. Additionally, Aldi plans to donate over one million meals to local charities, community groups, and foodbanks across the UK to support those in need during the holiday season.
Luke Emery, the National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, emphasised the importance of community support during the busy Christmas period. He highlighted how customers can make a difference by using the in-store donation points to contribute to local causes. Neighbourly CEO, Steve Butterworth, stressed the significance of such donations, especially at a time when many foodbanks are facing challenges in meeting demand.
The top most in-demand items this Christmas include tinned food, festive treats, toiletries, tea/coffee, breakfast cereals, juices, UHT milk, cleaning products, rice/pasta, cooking sauces, children’s gifts, and pet food. Aldi has been working closely with Neighbourly throughout the year to donate surplus food from its stores to those in need.
As the holiday season approaches, it’s heartening to see businesses like Aldi stepping up to support communities in need. By providing a platform for shoppers to donate essential items, Aldi is not only addressing the immediate needs of foodbanks but also fostering a sense of unity and support within local communities.
In a year that has been challenging for many, the generosity and goodwill shown by organisations like Aldi and the ongoing efforts of volunteers and donors are a shining light of hope and kindness. As we come together to support one another during this festive season, let us remember the importance of empathy, compassion, and solidarity in helping those who are most vulnerable in our society.
