Escape to the Country presenter Jules Hudson is on a mission to inspire Brits to get outdoors and take a walk this winter. Jules recently participated in a walk at Monmouth Castle as part of a campaign supporting veterans. The charity Walking With The Wounded has launched their annual Walking Home fundraising effort, encouraging everyone to take a walk this winter season. Jules, a former Army Reservist, leads the campaign and was joined by local cadets from the Monmouth Detachment ACF and Haberdashers Monmouth School CCF.
This year’s campaign, with the motto ‘Let’s Talk’, aims to not only combat loneliness but also initiate conversations about mental health. Research shows that outdoor exercise is the most popular mental health-boosting activity for veterans, with 90% saying spending time outdoors is key to improving mental health. Jules expressed his pride in supporting such a worthy cause and hopes to inspire others to contribute to the valuable work done by Walking With The Wounded for veterans.
Tony Hulton, CEO of WWTW, highlighted the importance of coming together during the festive season to support the mental health of service members and to start meaningful conversations about mental well-being. The ‘Walking Home. Let’s Talk’ campaign encourages breaking the silence around mental health and supporting those who have served. Participants in this year’s fundraiser are invited to take on a sponsored walk with friends, family, or colleagues, with no minimum distance or fundraising target.
In addition to providing support for veterans’ mental, physical, and social well-being, Walking With The Wounded aims to educate the public on the challenges veterans face post-service. Over £2 million has been raised in the past decade through the annual Walking Home fundraisers. Those interested in participating can sign up for a sponsored walk on the Walking With The Wounded website.
By supporting the campaign, individuals can make a significant impact on veterans’ lives and contribute to raising awareness about mental health issues in the veteran community. This initiative not only promotes physical well-being through outdoor activities but also fosters a sense of community and support for those who have served their country. Join Jules Hudson and Walking With The Wounded in making a difference this winter by taking a walk and starting conversations about mental health.
