Shops and apartments to be built on Bridgend land previously earmarked for new health centre

Plans have been approved for a mixed-use development in Bridgend, Wales, on land that was initially designated for a new health centre. Bridgend Council has given the green light for a project at Ffordd Tirion in Broadlands, which will consist of a combination of shops and apartments. The proposal, first put forward by developers in 2021, will involve constructing a two-storey building that will house three retail units with community spaces on the ground floor and ten self-contained flats on the first floor.

The development is set to take place on vacant land adjacent to the Llangewydd Arms public house, located in the Broadlands District Centre on the Broadlands Estate. The aim of the project is to transform the currently unused land, which is covered with scrub and vegetation, into a vibrant mixed-use space that serves the local community. The ten residential flats in the building will comprise eight one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units, offering modern living spaces for residents.

Included in the plans are provisions for eighteen parking spaces, including one for disabled parking and another for deliveries, as well as designated areas for bicycle storage and waste disposal. Despite the approval from Bridgend Council, there have been objections raised by residents, with a total of eleven letters submitted regarding the revised proposals. Of these letters, five expressed support for the project, while six raised concerns, particularly around issues such as highway safety, loss of green space, and the visual impact on the area.

Interestingly, the land was originally earmarked for a new health centre in the Broadlands area. However, it was revealed that the local health board decided against pursuing the development of a health facility on that site. Following discussions and deliberations, the plans for the mixed-use development were given the go-ahead at a meeting of the authority’s planning committee held on October 31.

Overall, the approved project signifies a new chapter for the vacant land at Ffordd Tirion, with the transformation into a bustling hub of shops and residential spaces set to breathe new life into the area. Despite some objections, the developments aim to enhance the local community and provide much-needed amenities in Bridgend.
