A terrifying incident unfolded at Banbury station in Oxfordshire as a pram with a two-month-old baby inside was struck by a train, leaving passengers in shock and horror. The collision, which occurred at a speed of 35mph, caused the pram to spin and tip over, resulting in the infant falling onto the platform surface and sustaining a minor head injury.
According to a report from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, the accident took place on June 8, and CCTV footage captured the moments leading up to the tragic event. The footage showed the infant’s parent momentarily letting go of the pram, which then rolled towards the platform edge and made contact with the moving train.
Investigators highlighted that the incident occurred due to the pram rolling along the platform slope, which was sloping towards the platform edge at that specific location. The report emphasised the importance of station operators understanding and addressing potential hazards associated with platform designs to prevent such accidents in the future.
Further analysis revealed that there were limitations in the signage and communication to alert passengers, particularly pram users, of the dangers posed by platform slopes. The report pointed out deficiencies in the visibility and design of warning signage, which may have contributed to the lack of awareness among passengers about the risks involved.
Moreover, the investigation shed light on similar incidents at other train stations, indicating a recurring issue that needs to be addressed industry-wide. Recommendations were made to enhance safety measures, including the application of appropriate standards for platform markings, signage, and announcements to inform and guide passengers effectively.
The report also highlighted the need for collaborative efforts between station operators and infrastructure managers to mitigate risks associated with sloping platforms. It stressed the importance of proactive risk assessment and compliance with safety standards to ensure passenger safety across all railway stations.
In response to the tragic incident, Chiltern Railways took steps to install additional signage and review existing safety measures at Banbury station. While efforts were made to improve passenger awareness and prevent similar accidents, the report emphasised the ongoing need for vigilance and adherence to safety protocols within the rail industry.
As investigations continue and safety protocols are being re-evaluated, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of prioritising passenger safety and implementing effective measures to prevent accidents and injuries on railway platforms.
