Historic building at UNESCO World Heritage Site in Wales torched in ‘abhorrent’ act of arson

An “abhorrent” act of arson has caused significant damage to a historic building within the Dinorwig Quarry in Wales. The structure, located within the confines of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, fell victim to a deliberate fire on Saturday, October 26, at approximately 1pm. Fortunately, a vigilant member of the public spotted the fire, prompting fire crews to swiftly intervene and prevent further harm. North Wales Police have condemned the perpetrators for their “blatant lack of respect” for the site’s heritage.

The incident took place at the first drum house on the incline directly opposite the Lake Railway Shop and Cafe within Dinorwig Quarry, as reported by North Wales Live. The swift response from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service managed to extinguish the fire before it could cause extensive damage to the drum house roof. Highlighting the significance of the quarry, authorities emphasised that Dinorwig Quarry is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the drum house classified as a scheduled monument, indicating national importance and statutory protection.

Characterising the arson as a “mindless” and “extremely disappointing” act, the police highlighted the historic site’s centuries-long history and significance, calling on anyone with information to come forward. The slate landscape of North West Wales earned World Heritage Site status in 2021. Recent reports by North Wales Live have raised concerns about potential damage caused by ‘Insta-trashing’ at Dinorwig Quarry, potentially leading to the closure of the site to the public.
