There’s finally a re-opening date for the vital Rhigos Mountain Road which has been shut for months

The Rhigos Mountain Road, a vital route that has been closed for months, is set to re-open soon. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has announced a new completion date for the repair works on the road, which were delayed due to weather conditions and the complexity of the project.

Initially closed for repair work following a fire, the road between Treherbert and Rhigos has been shut since July 22. The closure was necessary to address damage caused by a wildfire at the Treherbert end, impacting a significant area of the mountainside, including netting and fencing.

Despite efforts to expedite the completion, the council now anticipates that the road will re-open on Friday, November 22. Challenges in the final phase of the project, such as the unexpected removal of 700 tonnes of rock, have contributed to the extended timeline.

The council acknowledged the patience and cooperation of local communities throughout the closure, emphasizing the need for a thorough and safe completion to ensure the road’s long-term viability. Factors such as adverse weather, geological complexity, loose materials, and limited site access have influenced the revised timeline.

While the first two phases of work proceeded as planned, the third and final phase has evolved into a larger operation than anticipated. Ensuring the stability of the rock face is crucial to prevent further deterioration, potentially leading to an extended emergency closure.

The council expressed gratitude for the progress made amid challenging conditions and highlighted the intricate nature of the remaining works. Community support and understanding have been crucial in navigating the complexities of the project, which aims to secure the road’s future safety.

In a statement, the council underscored the critical importance of completing the works comprehensively to avoid future disruptions. The project’s significance in maintaining a safe and accessible mountain road underscores the shared goal of stakeholders in the region.

As the completion date approaches, the council remains committed to delivering a high-quality solution that addresses the damage caused by the wildfire. Local residents are encouraged to stay informed about the project’s progress and the impending reopening of the vital Rhigos Mountain Road.
