‘I thought his intention was to kill me’ The harrowing words of woman subjected to hours-long attack

In a harrowing court case, a woman shared her terrifying experience of enduring a physical and sexual assault that left her fearing for her life. The survivor, who remains anonymous, recounted the traumatic incident involving Cail Sweetland, who subjected her to hours of torment at a hotel in Cardiff in 2023.

During the ordeal, Sweetland violently ripped off her clothes, bit and slapped her, and even smashed a vodka bottle on her head, causing a bleed on her brain. Despite her protests and clear refusal to engage in any intimate activity, Sweetland proceeded to sexually assault her in a deliberate act to inflict pain.

In a victim impact statement read out in court, the woman detailed the lasting emotional and mental anguish she continues to endure following the brutal attack. She expressed her fear that Sweetland’s intention that night was to kill her, describing the abuse as relentless and traumatic. The victim also highlighted the struggles she faced in coping with the aftermath, including sleep deprivation, deteriorating mental health, anxiety, and depression.

Marian Lewis, representing Sweetland, acknowledged that alcohol had clouded his judgment that night but stressed that it was not an excuse for his abhorrent actions. Several character references presented to the court portrayed Sweetland’s behaviour as out of character, and he expressed genuine remorse for his behaviour.

Sweetland, who had no prior relevant convictions, pleaded guilty to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, unlawfully wounding, and sexual assault by penetration. In sentencing, Judge Shomon Khan condemned the attack as horrific and handed Sweetland an eight-year prison term for the lead offence of sexual assault by penetration, with concurrent two-year sentences for the other charges. Additionally, Sweetland was issued with an indefinite restraining order to prevent any contact with the victim.

The victim’s powerful statement emphasised the long road ahead in her healing process and the need to regain her sense of self following the traumatic incident. She acknowledged the ongoing emotional challenges she faces and her determination to overcome the trauma and rebuild her life.
