Abuser ripped woman’s clothes off, bit and sexually assaulted her in vile attack

A woman in Wales endured a horrifying ordeal at the hands of her abuser, who subjected her to a violent attack lasting several hours. The attacker, Cail Sweetland, ripped the woman’s clothes off, bit her, slapped her, and sexually assaulted her. The vicious assault culminated in Sweetland smashing an empty vodka bottle on her head, causing a bleed on her brain. The incident occurred at a hotel in Cardiff in 2023, where the victim was tormented by Sweetland.

During the sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that the victim and Sweetland had been drinking heavily and arguing before the violent outburst. The victim explicitly stated to Sweetland that she did not want to engage in intimacy with him that night. Despite her pleas and resistance, Sweetland continued his ruthless assault, leaving the victim with physical and emotional scars.

At one point during the attack, a concerned female receptionist entered the room and witnessed the victim naked on the floor, bleeding and distressed. The victim was then taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where she received treatment for her injuries, including cuts, bruising, and a brain bleed.

In a powerful victim impact statement read out in court, the victim expressed the lasting trauma and emotional turmoil caused by the brutal assault. She described feelings of confusion, humiliation, shame, and fear for her safety and well-being. The victim highlighted the detrimental impact on her mental health, sleep patterns, and overall well-being, expressing the ongoing struggle to heal from the traumatic experience.

Sweetland, who pleaded guilty to multiple charges including assault causing actual bodily harm, unlawfully wounding, and sexual assault by penetration, was sentenced to eight years and one month in prison. The judge described the attack as “horrific” and emphasised the long-lasting effects it had on the victim, who continues to suffer psychologically from the ordeal.

In her defence of Sweetland, his lawyer attributed his actions to alcohol clouding his judgement, although she acknowledged that it was not an excuse. Sweetland expressed remorse for his behaviour and acknowledged the gravity of his actions. He was issued with an indefinite restraining order to prevent any contact with the victim in the future.

The victim’s harrowing account serves as a reminder of the profound impact of domestic abuse and the critical need for support and resources for victims of violence. Resources and helplines are available for individuals affected by abuse, offering confidential support and guidance to those in need. The case underscores the importance of raising awareness about domestic violence and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
