Police Granted Additional Powers in Two Cardiff Areas Ahead of Bonfire Night
Police authorities in Butetown and Grangetown in Cardiff have been granted supplementary powers as concerns regarding anti-social behaviour escalate with the advent of bonfire night. Reports of individuals hurling fireworks at community members have prompted the police to take proactive measures. The additional powers bestowed upon the officers enable them to curb gatherings and unlawful use of fireworks over a 48-hour duration.
The dispersal order, sanctioned under Section 35 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014, has been instituted from 6pm on Monday, November 4, to 6pm on Wednesday, November 6. This step follows a similar order in Abercynon, which was instigated due to safety apprehensions regarding a bonfire in the town. The specific regions in Cardiff where the order applies are Butetown and Grangetown.
Acting inspector Samantha Johnson from the Cardiff Bay Neighbourhood Team emphasised, “The dispersal order is in place over 48 hours as a preventative measure. We will have an increased presence in Butetown, and officers will not hesitate to enforce the extra powers bestowed upon them to ensure community safety. We urge parents and guardians to have conversations with young individuals to deter engagement in anti-social conduct.”
South Wales Police articulated a zero-tolerance stance towards anti-social behaviour, underscoring that the dispersal order is a component of a wide array of measures being implemented.
In Cardiff, the police emphasised on a collaborative approach with the community to maintain safety and prevent instances of anti-social behaviour during this festive period. The enforcement of these additional powers signifies a commitment to upholding law and order and safeguarding the well-being of the residents.
As bonfire night approaches, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or concerning activities to the authorities promptly. By working together, the community can ensure a peaceful and joyous celebration while abiding by the laws and regulations in place.
This initiative exemplifies the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the community to uphold public safety and ensure a harmonious environment for all residents during festive occasions.
